02.02.2015: THE NEW GREEK GOVERMENT RE-BOOTS EUROPE' S GLOBAL ROLE

Written by Vassilis Kopsahilis*

Almost a week has elapsed since the leftist SYRIZA and rightwing Independent Hellenes parties formed a coalition government in Greece. However, their message has already blazed across Europe. Their vision is not restricted to changing Greece’s outlook; it goes far beyond that. Greece’s outlook is associated with the destiny of the European Union (EU) and their goal is to re-boot both, since they believe that the EU is going in the wrong direction. Yesterday we had the first bold sign of this new aim. The reasoning behind the decision of the Greek government to oppose any new sanctions against Russia is based on real politic. As long as Russia is a close trading partner of the EU and, additionally, a strong geopolitical neighbour, it is not in the interest of the EU to take further sanctions against Russia, simply because sanctions both damage EU economic and trade interests and prevent both sides from negotiating a feasible solution to the Ukrainian Question.

19.10.2014: TURKEY > DEFENSE INDUSTRY AS POLITICAL INSTRUMENT

Justice and Development Party (AKP) decision-makers, obsessed of late with the idea of the “New Turkey,” have decided that to be a powerful state Turkey has to rely on a “national government-strong army-strong national defense industry” formula. In the AKP’s aspiration to become a powerful regional and global force, the defense industry has emerged as an important political instrument. Fikri Turkel, a writer for the pro-government daily Yeni Safak, writes about Turkey’s place in the $1.5 trillion annual global defense market, which is expected to reach $2.5 trillion in the next 10 years. Turkish decision-makers constantly say that by 2023, Turkey must get at least $25 billion from this lucrative market. In 2008, Turkey’s defense industry exports were $600 million. At the end of 2012, exports doubled to $1.2 billion. In 2013, the number of companies working in Turkey's defense sector was more than 500, while exports neared $1.5 billion. The target for 2014 defense exports is estimated at $1.8 billion.

16.09.2014: ARMENIA IN GLOBAL PUBLICITY DRIVE

Where in the world is Armenia? It's a question that the country's President, Serzh Sargsyan, is hoping to get more people around the globe to answer correctly. He wants to mobilise the 10 million Armenians living abroad for a global internet publicity campaign to boost tourism and influence foreign investors. Entitled the One Armenian, One Article campaign the idea is to get expatriates to write positive stories about the country. President Sargsyan and others behind the publicity drive say their country needs a higher profile, because many people struggle to recall anything about the nation. So just what do people know about Armenia? 'We never hear about it'. London in the summer is full of tourists so it was easy to conduct an impromptu series of informal interviews, ambushing dozens of unsuspecting strangers from around the globe to get their views.

18.10.2014: ΤHE RIGHT CHOICE

Written by Nikos Topouzis*

US President Obama made the right choice to finally confront the Jihadists in the Middle East. Terror and murder need to stop in the region. Common criminals and war merchants are making huge sums of money using the name of God in the most disgraceful way. Let’s just point out that most of ISIS and AlNusra victims are their fellow Muslims. Some people accuse POTUS that his decision came too late and it is too little. Another also accuse the United States that it has helped ISIS grow and now they have to face it, just like the Taliban. It is true that some elements of the US administration, especially within the State Department aided the infamous “Arab Spring” in its early days. Miscalculation, false hopes, misguided by EU, Turkey and the Gulf monarchies.. Whatever the reason, the US did provide some help to Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

18.08.2014: ΥΕΤ ΑΝΟΤΗΕR WAR OF DECEIT

Written by Ran Cohen*

The Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights is now 47 years old. Two generations of Israelis have grown up, matured and been educated in a country depriving millions of their political rights. In Israel’s political leadership, settlers residing in the Occupied Territories and recent immigrants from the former Soviet Union are over-represented. No wonder, then, that basic notions of democracy have been virtually abandoned. For example, in a step highly reminiscent of anti-Semitic boycotts against Jews in Eastern and Central Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Israel’s foreign minister Lieberman explicitly urged Israelis (i.e. Jews) to boycott businesses of Israeli Arabs. Having grown up in a Soviet dictatorship, it is the same Lieberman who found Putin’s 2011 elections in Russia fair and democratic.
