29.04.2014: SHAMEFUL STATEMENT BY ERDOGAN

Written by Levon Mutafyan*

Once again, Turkey showed its real image and did immoral and shameful acts, without learning lessons from history and the present and not wanting to join the civilized world. Instead of criticizing its shameful acts committed in the past and restoring the historical truth, Turkey distorted the history again and showed its hypocrisy and reaffirmed the fact that lack of awareness its own sins has become a moral quality and a state policy for the country. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan’s message ahead of April 24th which, the Prime Minister believed was a message of condolence to the Armenian people has already been sharply criticized by Armenian religious leaders, as well as state and political figures. Of course, some rushed to state that the Turkish authorities have changed their mindset and have finally decided to tell the truth and talk about the Genocide.

22.04.2014: ARMENIAN GENOCIDE > FINDING A FIT TESTAMENT TO A TIMELESS CRIME

Written by Robert Fisk*

The very last Armenian survivors of the 1915 genocide – in which a million and a half Christians were slaughtered by the Ottoman Turks – are dying, and Armenians are now facing the same fearful dilemma that Jews around the world will confront in scarcely three decades’ time: how to keep the memory of their holocausts alive when the last living witnesses of Ottoman and Nazi evil are dead? At a recent conference in California, Armenians have been discussing how to maintain the integrity of their historical tragedy in hundreds of years to come – when even the grandchildren of the survivors and victims have gone. Like Jews in Israel, Europe and America, the Armenians have amassed tens of thousands of documents, photographs, digital recordings of survivors’ testimony and files from Ottoman archives showing the orders for the destruction of Turkey’s Ottoman Christians.

28.03.2014: WHY TURKEY CARES WHAT HAPPENS IN UKRAINE?

Why Turkey cares what happens in Ukraine? As tensions continue to escalate between Russia and Ukraine, regional powers like Turkey may look at ways to get into the mix, according to experts. Lying just 173 miles (280 km) from the Turkish coast of Anatolia across the Black Sea, Crimea, the Ukrainian autonomous region that is now overrun by Russian troops, is home to a community of ethnic Turks known as Tatars. They oppose a Russian annexation of the isthmus, Soner Cagaptay and James Jeffery of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, a Washington-based think tank, wrote on Tuesday. Crimea is ethnically divided between two minorities, Tatars and ethnic Ukrainians, and an ethnic Russian majority.

31.03.2014: WHY ARMENIA IS THE REGION' S MOST STABLE COUNTRY

Written by William Bairamian*

Armenia is known for being in a rough neighborhood. What is less known is how Armenia became the most stable country in the region. The Armenite looks at Armenia and its neighborhood to see how the country came to be the most stable and what it means for Armenia’s future. In 2005, the United States opened what was at the time the largest American embassy in the world on the shores of Lake Yerevan. It was befuddling to many – why build a huge embassy in a country where the US has few economic interests and fewer military interests? Especially since Armenia was surrounded by three countries – Georgia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan – that had made their preference for American friendship clear. Conspiracy theories abound: the USA was planning on going into Iran after it was done with Iraq so it wanted to have a base close by. And the Marines stationed at the embassy were proof – though Marines are stationed at every American embassy in the world – that Iran was indeed next.

09.02.2014: SUNNI ISLAMISM, THE WORLD' S GREATEST THREAT

Written by Barry Rubin*

No, it sure isn’t the age of Aquarius or of Multicultural, Politically Correct love-ins. It’s the age of revolutionary Islamism, especially Sunni Islamism. And you better learn to understand what this is all about real fast. (Shia Islamism, important mainly because of Iran and especially due to its nuclear ambitions, is number two on the threat list. But that’s not our topic today.) Focusing on the Sunni revolutionary Islamist tidal wave, the foundation of knowledge is that there are three types and they are all bad, very bad. A lot of people are going to be misinforming you about this and getting others—never themselves, of course—killed. Sometimes people ask me why I use the phrase “revolutionary” Sunni Islamism. The reason is to remind everyone that this is a revolutionary movement like those of the past that seek to use a variety of strategies and tactics–of which violence might only be one–to seize, hold, and use state power to transform societies. Some ask why I use the word “Islamism” and the reason is because this is a specific, conscious set of organized political movements.
