26.04.2013: PENAL CODE 301 & TURKISH SCHOLARS IN TURKEY

Written by Odette Bazil

Again, another Turkish journalist is to be thrown in jail for - according to Turkish Penal Code 301 -  “insulting the Turkish Nation , the Turkish Republic, its government or governmental institutions”. The name of that Turkish journalist is Temel Demirer. At his first trial , he had been charged for the crime cited in Penal Code 301 and had been sentenced to two years in prison . Then he was told that the sentence could be withheld if during the coming 3 years he would refrain from committing the same crime. Immediately after the trial , just in front of the Court buildings Temel Demirer said this:

22.04.2013: FORMING A COMMON ENERGY DOCTRINE FOR GREECE CYPRUS

Greece and Cyprus have to begin now, working  on a common energy doctrine, by enabling  both  institutional  tools: A  Supreme  Cooperation Council  and  a Joint Energy Cooperation  Council. That was the key point in HEL.C.E.I.A.' s president Stavros Karkaletsis speech, in the greek cypriot oil and gas summit (Limassol, 18 & 19 of April). Term Vision: Exclusive Economic Zones of Greece and Cyprus consolidated and operationally connected. So that after not so many years to reach a point, (as one nation-two states), to control, as far as possible, a huge sea area from the Adriatic Sea and Corfu, to the seas of Limassol and Famagusta. This policy, will bring an upgrated geostrategic value of the hellenic area.

18.04.2013: CHRISTIANS FACE PERSECUTION, EXTINCTION IN MENA

Written by Clare Lopez*

Across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, Islam is on the march again and Christians are marked for annihilation. In lands once known as the heartland of Christianity, where the Apostles and early missionaries spread their faith, Christianity is a faith under fire and Christians themselves are a dwindling presence. Nowhere is the Islamic assault against Christians more intense than the killing fields of Syria, where rebel advances by both the al-Qa’eda affiliate, Jabhat al-Nusra, and Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated militias of the Syrian Free Army (SFA), inevitably result in pogroms against Christian populations in every town they capture from the Bashar al-Assad regime that previously had protected Syria’s minority Christians. As Nina Shea wrote recently at National Review Online, the 2,000-year-old Christian Assyrian community in embattled Syria literally faces extinction, as an Islamic “ethno-religious cleansing” targets its defenseless members with kidnappings, murder, rape and threats.

21.04.2013: CYPRUS CRISIS, OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES

Written by Menekse Tokyay, Southeastern Times, Turkey

The economic crisis in Cyprus coupled with the dispute over natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean has observers and politicians raising questions over whether the current crisis could be a catalyst to restart stalled negotiations between Turkey and Cyprus or further split the two communities. A reunified Cyprus may help bring newly discovered gas in the Eastern Mediterranean to European markets. The perceived opportunity comes after Cyprus was forced to restructure its banking sector to avoid default and an exit from the eurozone in exchange for a 10 billion euro IMF and European bailout. Without a strong banking system to prop up the economy, cash-strapped Cyprus now needs to extract newly found natural gas deposits more than ever.

09.04.2013: TURKEY IS GUILTY OF THE GENOCIDE IN WEST ARMENIA

In order to create a Turkish nation from above, Turkish nationalists waged a bloody campaign against non-Turkish and non-Muslim elements of the empire. The First World War served as an excuse for the Young Turks, the then Turkish goverment, to exterminate Armenians. It was a deliberate and sustain war, in the course of which hundreds of thousands Armenians, Syrians and Greeks had been ruthlessly killed or forced into exile. The collapse of the Ottomans had left a power vacuum, filled by another section of the Turkish nationalists, called Kemalists at a later time.
